Solution

What steps make a custom user attribute required in Okta?

Navigate to the Profile Editor in the Okta Admin Console and modify the specific custom attribute to mark it as required.

  1. Sign in to the Okta Admin Console.
  2. Go to Directory and select Profile Editor.
  3. Locate the custom attribute that requires modification and select the pencil icon next to it.
  4. Select the Attribute Required checkbox in the Edit Window.
  5. Select Save Attribute.

The Edit Window displays the Attribute Required checkbox under the attribute properties.

NOTE: The Okta user profile consists of both base attributes and custom attributes. Among base attributes, Okta allows only the First Name and Last Name fields to be set as required. To import users with empty First Name and Last Name attributes, clear the Attribute Required checkbox in Okta to prevent import failure.
